When the player reaches the Depths, they discover a temple guarded by strange beings. Thanks to either the assistance of Five Pebbles or the blessings of the Echoes, which bestow a higher potential for Karma, they let the Slugcat pass without trouble. https://mayfieldpalace.com/ Deep within the temple lies a lake of void fluid into which the player must dive. After diving for some time, a godlike being assists the Slugcat in ascending. Its old life gone, Slugcat swims through the void along with many identical looking duplicates of them that copy the player’s movements. After meeting the other Slugcats a white light appears, which the player must swim into, which finishes the game, showing one final cutscene before the credits. If playing as Survivor, the ending cutscene shows them renuting with their tribe at the Slugcat tree seen in the cutscene at the very beginning of the game. If playing as Monk, they are seen reuniting with Survivor in the Void Sea.
Predators range from camouflaged plants to large vultures to Komodo dragon-like lizards and large aquatic creatures. Many enemies can incapacitate the slugcat in one hit, and some species have different variations, such as the different colors of lizards, which all have unique characteristics. Creatures spawn from dens in set locations and can move freely throughout the region, meaning the player is sometimes faced with problems that they can’t avoid. All creatures in the game possess dynamic AI and exist in the game’s world perpetually, even when not on the same screen as the player. Players are expected to mainly evade enemies, but do need to experiment with spears to climb walls and knock fruit off of vines. It is possible to kill predators by repeatedly hitting certain parts of them with spears, though attacking them is mainly used as a way to ward them off. However, killing creatures becomes almost a requirement in the base game’s hardest campaign, Hunter, where the slugcat is a carnivore and must eat the flesh of other creatures to get meaningful amounts of food. The slugcat, if holding an object in each hand, can swap their places by pressing the grab button twice. It can also eat mushrooms, which grant status effects, such as faster reaction times (shown in-game as time slowing down) and increasing how far the slugcat jumps.
As almost any critical or user review will tell you, Rain World is a difficult game. It isn’t and shouldn’t be controversial to say so. However, opinions diverge on the significance of this difficulty. Some, like this Gamespot review, contend that failure makes frustration “devolve into apathy.” Others might take a perspective like Hidetaka Miyazaki does in his interview with The New Yorker, and emphasize “joy that comes from overcoming hardship.” I’m not here to say that either of these perspectives, or anything in between, is wrong. However, the underlying logic with each of them is that difficulty is just a seasoning sprinkled on top of the game, and players will either appreciate the flavor or spit it out. In this view, difficulty is an adversarial force, something that might attract a certain kind of player, but only by pushing others away.
In January 2023, a downloadable content pack titled Rain World: Downpour was released for PC. Downpour was released for Switch, PlayStation, and Xbox on July 11, 2023. The expansion pack received generally positive reviews from critics.
When Rain World first entered my life in 2017, I couldn’t walk. Following a car accident where I injured my femur, pelvis, and three vertebrae, I needed surgery to allow my right leg to heal. It was weeks before I could put weight on my right leg, months before I could walk as I had done prior to my accident, and over a year before I could run again. All this is to say that I had a lot of time to pass while sitting down; naturally, I sunk many hours into video games that summer.
