Clemens got through the seventh, but was pinch-hit for in the eighth inning with the Red Sox threatening (he’d exceeded 130 pitches by this point and there is controversy over whether Clemens asked out due to a blister, or was removed by manager John McNamara). The Red Sox had another chance to add to the lead, but Jesse Orosco got Buckner to fly out to end the eighth.
The 1986 World Series was televised by NBC with Vin Scully on the call alongside Joe Garagiola. Scully’s call of the final play in Game 6 of the 1986 World Series would quickly become an iconic one to baseball fans, with the normally calm Scully growing increasingly excited:

The play also is referenced in an episode of The Simpsons titled “Brother’s Little Helper” and in the musical Johnny Baseball. On October 23, 2008, during former Federal Reserve chairman Alan Greenspan’s testimony in House hearings on the economic crisis of 2008, Representative John Yarmuth referred to Greenspan as one of “three Bill Buckners.” Buckner and Mookie Wilson appeared in an MLB Network commercial for the 2016 postseason, “Catching Up”, marking the 30th anniversary of the 1986 World Series and their roles in it.

• Kiké Hernández added a triple, too, making the Dodgers the first team with two triples in a Fall Classic game since the Yankees in 2000 Game 4. They weren’t just any two triples — they were the first two hits of the series for the Dodgers. Los Angeles is the second team to triple for its first two hits of a World Series, joining the 1953 Yankees, from Hank Bauer and Billy Martin, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.
But in the eighth, the Dodgers capitalized on a costly defensive miscue. Ohtani rocketed a Tommy Kahnle changeup for a double off the top of the right-center field wall. Juan Soto’s one-hop throw back to the infield bounced off Gleyber Torres’ glove, and Ohtani was able to advance to third.
